Car Trips
Oxford, MS
Only about 5 hours from Atlanta, Oxford is SUCH a fun town for a long weekend. If you’re a foodie – these are your people. Snackbar is my favourite restaurant in the South, and I’m not alone. Chef Vishwesh Bhatt won James Beard’s 2019 Best Chef: South award (and it’s about time!) While you’re feasting, be sure to visit Wonderbird Spirits — making sensational gin using Mississippi rice! It’s like sake…only better!
Oxford Treehouse Gallery, Square Books, Faulkner’s grave, Rowan Oak…I could go on for days! Stay right in Downtown at Graduate Oxford, celebrating the Ole Miss life…or go all-out luxe at The Chancellor’s House. Don’t miss their afternoon tea!
Ellijay
Ellijay is so much more than apples! Explore the downtown area, take in a few wine tastings, or roam the shores of Carter’s Lake either by boat or by hiking the shoreline. It’s a perfectly family-friendly location, but we prefer to visit without the kiddos. We also adore all the unique ways to stay here. Try a glamping overnight at Elatse’Yi in an airstream or geodome!
Gatlinburg
Feel the season change this time of year by heading north for a long weekend in Gatlinburg! Stay at DJ’s Station, which honours the firefighters in the region. Go waterfall-chasing at Great Smoky Mountains National Park, chow on amazing food, and soar to new heights at Anateeska.
Tybee Island
Warm beach weekends are coming to an end, but if you’re like us, you want to stretch it out as long as you can! We adore the wide, sand beaches here. Hit up an adorable cottage or inn, and just lounge the day away. Need more? Take an eco-kayak tour, meander on a nature walk or set sail on a sunset cruise.
Don’t miss the Annual Labor Day Beach Bash music festival at the Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion. Free live music makes it fun, and it’s followed by a fireworks show that can be viewed from Tybee’s eastern beaches.
Milledgeville
An exciting Labor Day getaway doesn’t have to mean going to the big city – sometimes an escape to a smaller Southern gem is exactly what you need. There is so much history here – but the young generation at the college in Milledgeville keeps it boisterous and lively.
Outdoor lovers can get their fix with a bike ride under the oaks along the Oconee River Greenway, a round of golf at the Milledgeville Country Club, or a kayak tour along the shores of Lake Sinclair. And don’t skip a ride on Milly, Milledgeville’s famous trolley tour, which will introduce you to all the must-see attractions.
Plane Trips
Onslow County North Carolina
With direct flights from Atlanta, this east coast vacation is a must-do labor day vacation for families — it was our favourite trip of 2019! Stay in a world-class AirBnB right on the coast, where you can watch the sun rise each morning. Kayak the waterways, take a private yacht cruise, or head out to find whelk shells and sharks’ teeth. Finally, lounge on the beautiful beaches all day at either Hammocks Beach State Park or North Topsail Beach.
New York City
Feel like heading north? There are tons of last minute Labor Day opportunities in the Big Apple. Explore a few art galleries, bake a naked cake, and walk the Brooklyn Bridge! I have to tell you, I am anxious to get back and visit the new glamping tents on Governor’s Island! Need a fun place to stay in NYC? Try Even Hotels in Times Square.
St Louis
Just on the left side of the Mississippi River is the exciting town of St Louis! Hang out at the city’s eclectic space, The Loop. Walk both the Lewis and the Clark Trail for a bit of history…but the big draw here on Labor Day is the Big Muddy Blues Fest, featuring more than 65 bands playing on seven stages. Music Mecca! Finally, the best place to recoup from that hangover? Visit Route 66 State Park or lounge by the lake at Castlewood State Park.
Colorado
Many vacationers select the Colorado Rocky Mountains in the winter for its incomparable downhill skiing opportunities, but don’t miss the absolutely incredible summers. There are several reasons why the Colorado Rockies rock in the summer months. There is no humidity (woot!) and the outdoor activities are endless. The ski resorts transform into playgrounds: Not only can you bike and hike on trails on the ski hills, most resorts offer awesome attractions slope side…tubing, mountain slides, mountain biking, zip lines and so much more!
California
Sue and her boys headed to Central California this year and had a blast! Visit Alcatraz, walk the Golden Gate Bridge, or go kayaking in Morro Bay. Want to explore more of The Golden State? Most people think ‘Los Angeles‘ but I’m going to vote for a hike through Joshua Tree National Park and then a stop in Wine Country. A first-time visit to California Wine Country might seem intimidating, though; so many wineries! No fear – here’s our beginner’s guide to Napa and Sonoma.
