By I have always been a big believer in the saying, “insurance is good because it covers you.” It’s a concept that is both reassuring and reassuringly familiar. The insurance industry exists to make sure that our coverage is adequate, and the people who do the insuring work with us to offer us fair premiums, so that we don’t have to worry about our costs.
Well, I can get behind that. For every person that buys insurance, there is a person that gets hurt. Not everyone has the money to buy insurance, and even those that do rarely have the means to pay for it. But it is a concept that is a little comforting.
This is a concept that is a bit reassuring, too. Just because you purchase insurance, does not mean that it will cover your losses. It is up to you to insure yourself. If you are at risk of being injured, you should not assume that no one will pay your bills.
Insurance is a necessary evil. Even if your insurance covers it, it does not mean that you will be protected against all risks. There are things you cannot prevent, such as natural disasters, accidents, and the like. But there are other things that you can take on, such as a catastrophic loss or a medical emergency which could cost you a fortune.
